There is a small village, Yuanfang, on the eastern foot of Taihang Mountain in Hebei Province, which is famous for its abundant production of apples. The apple planting area has expanded from 30 mu to 400 mu. Optimizing varieties is the first step in industrial development. Experts from the Institute of Shijiazhuang Fruits Research have established a high-quality new variety breeding nursery base in the village, introducing more than 30 new apple varieties and conducting analysis and evaluation on stress resistance, adaptability, and fruit quality. They have screened varieties suitable for local climate conditions and improved the existing fruit trees. Currently, the village mainly cultivates 3 new varieties of Red Fuji, namely 'Shifu Short Branch', 'Jihong', and 'Jiyan', independently cultivated by the Institute. The fruit surface is smooth, the color is dark red, and the flavor is rich, which is highly welcomed by growers and consumers.

The variety needs to be optimized, and the technology also needs to be upgraded. The experts have devoted to researching and exploring a comprehensive set of technical measures to improve the survival rate of fruit tree planting. Through the introduction and screening experiments of superior new apple varieties and dwarfing rootstocks, the transition of apples from dense planting on tree rootstocks to dense planting on dwarfing rootstocks has been achieved. To solve the problem of insufficient irrigation water in mountainous orchards, key technologies for efficient water use such as "four adaptability and three reduction" and small pipe outflow irrigation have been developed. After applying new technologies in the orchard, it achieved a 35% reduction in labor per mu, an average saving of 40% in irrigation water, a reduction of more than 3 times of medication per year, a savings of 200 yuan, and a 25% reduction in medication. In addition to strict regulations on picking time, there are standardized technical procedures for orchard cleaning, water and fertilizer management, thinning flowers and fruits, bagging, pest control, bag removal and coloring, harvesting and sorting, summer and winter pruning, and other processes. In recent years, in order to enhance brand awareness and create high-end brand apples, Yuanfang Village has started organic fruit production, adopting safe, high-quality, and efficient green production technologies such as high-efficiency cultivation mode, synchronous and efficient utilization of water and fertilizer, and organic comprehensive prevention and control of pests, diseases, and weeds.
